The Canary Islands (Islas Canarias) are situated just off the North West coast of Africa and South west coast of Spain in the Atlantic Ocean and spoil their many visitors with year round sunshine and a sub-tropical climate. An autonomous community of Spain, they consist of a total of 13 islands of volcanic origin, with the 7 larger islands being the most popular for holidays. Each Island - Tenerife, Lanzarote, La Palma, Gran Canaria, El Heirro, La Gomera and Fuerteventura, all have their own individual characteristics to bear in mind when looking for a holiday to the canary islands.
Before traveling to the Canary Islands its worth researching which of the resorts on which island would suit your holiday needs the best. They are all easily accessible from the UK and have something for everyone. Beaches on the Eastern Canary Islands generally have fine golden sand whilst the Western Islands beaches have black sand and rocks. Tenerife, the largest island and most populated has plenty of things to do and breathtaking mountainous regions coupled with a choice of many different resorts.
Explore Lanzarote with its many coves and dramatic volcanic coastline, with a choice of lively or quieter more family oriented resorts to choose from. The Canary Islands enjoy spring like weather all year round and boast 3000 hours of sunlight a year. The annual average temperature is 22°C with the hottest months in July/August. Between November - January you can expect light rain. Average sea temperatures are 18 - 23°C.

All 7 of the islands have airports although some are for inter-island hopping only - Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and La Palma house the main airports which receive international flights from the UK. Although there are two main airports on Tenerife, most international flights go to Tenerife Sur (Reina Sofia). The bulk of international flights to the Canary Islands directly are charter flights.
Favourite resorts if you want a lively holiday include Playa de las Americas in Tenerife, Playa del Ingles in Gran Canaria, with plenty of lively bars and nightclubs to go around! Family nightlife can also be found in the busier resorts of Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria, Costa Teguise in Lanzarote, Caleta de Fuste in Fuerteventura and Costa Adeje in Tenerife. Nightlife in the Canary Islands is very varied from karaoke to clubbing to just sitting in a bar watching the sun go down.
There are numerous festivals and carnivals throughout the Canary Islands all year round although there are a lot to choose from in and around February each year especially. Some of the most famous ones include Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival - an annual carnival held in February each year and Corpus Christi - celebrated throughout Spain annually in June.
