About the Izmir region of Turkey

The Izmir region of Turkey is popular with holiday makers due to its beautiful coastline, also known as the 'Turquoise coast'. However, it also offers other delights as a region, not least the Ephesus Roman city, situated inland from the coast. There are a wealth of historical and cultural sights and attractions to explore in this area of Turkey. Here in the Izmir region you will also find popular holiday resorts such as Kusadasi, Cesme, Izmir and Ozdere.

Holidays to Izmir

Izmir itself is a busy cosmopolitan City, re-invented and developed after being burnt down over a century ago. Situated on a bay with a busy port and harbour, Izmir offers a bustling way of life and plenty of shopping opportunities! With this region offering literally hundreds of archaeological sites, picturesque waterfronts and a huge range of beaches all lapped by sparkling blue waters, you'll be spoilt for choice when choosing a holiday here. The juxtaposition of the past, present and future is very apparent across the Izmir region with cosmopolitan, modern hotels and resorts burgeoning in harmony with amazing artifacts and history from the past. This makes the region an ideal place for turkey holidays for all different types of holidaymakers, from couples to families.

Izmir Holidays - Turkey

Envelop yourself in a time gone by and visit some of the greatest archeological sites in the world, including Ephesus, with the Temple of Artemis - one of the seven wonders of the world. Or relax on one of the many beaches in the Izmir region, from the busy beaches of popular Kusadasi to the more relaxed beaches of Cesme. Fulfill your shopping urges in Izmir with its city life and plentiful shops.

Izmir Climate

Izmir is popular with tourists in the Spring and Autumn months, aswell as Summer, as its Mediterranean climate is warm and mostly dry but not too hot, ideal for visiting the many historical sites in this area. Temperatures average in the mid to late 20°C's during these times. In Summer, temperatures can be hot reaching highs of 35°C in the peak months of July and August, with 12 hours of sunshine a day. Cooling winds along the coastline help to ease the midday heat for die hard sunbathers during this season. Holidaying in Izmir is very pleasant weather wise from late April until late October, making it a great destination for half term holiday breaks for families aswell as Summer holidays.

Popular Resorts in the Izmir region of Turkey

There are a variety of resorts to choose from when holidaying in the Izmir region of Turkey, depending on what type of holiday you are looking for.

For beach resorts along the beautiful Aegean coastline, Kusadasi is the most popular, with its shopping including the famous Grand Bazaar, hotels, beaches and great holiday climate offering 300 days of sunshine a year! The beaches here are sandy and plentiful, framed by the clear warm sea, with a great choice of watersports and activities. In the evening, the cafes and restaurants along the seafront buzz with tourists relaxing after a day sunbathing. Kusadasi is very popular with holidaymakers making it a lively and busy resort. Cruise ships also stop here, as its proximity to Ephesus makes it very popular as a base for excursions, plus there are other historical sites such as Miletus, Priene and Didyma to visit here.

If you fancy something quieter or more romantic, Ozdere, between Kusadasi and Cesme, is ideal. Like many of the Turkish holiday resorts Ozdere was originally a fishing village, set on the Aegean coast. Although now an established holiday resort it is quieter and more unspoilt than some of the others. Suitable for families also, there are a choice of all inclusive resorts here and safe sandy beaches. Ideal for a relaxing holiday, Ozdere remains a charming Turkish holiday resort.

Cesme, further along the coast and situated on the Cesme peninsula, is also more relaxed than Kusadasi or Izmir. A resort famed for its beauty, holidays in Cesme offer stunning beaches, historical sites, thermal springs and experiences of the authentic Turkish ways of life. Take a visit to the 14th Century castle here or the Roman amphitheatre. The area of Ilica offers both stunning beaches and thermal hot springs to realx and unwind in on holiday.

Izmir, the city itself, is both busy and lively, set on a modern and well kept harbour. Stay in Izmir to visit the historical and archeological attractions within the city and nearby, and to experience the fantastic nightlife, dining, shopping, museums and nearby beaches. Everything you'd expect from Turkey's third largest city, Izmir offers a great holiday resort for everyone.
