About Tenerife

Tenerife is one of the 7 main islands that make up the Canary Islands (Islas Canarias). Situated just off the North West coast of Africa and South West coast of Spain in the Atlantic Ocean, Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and one of the most popular. Mount Teide, the extinct volcano that dominates the island's skyline, and its surrounding topography is responsible for the varying climates between the North and South of the Island, with the North being more lush and green compared to the hot arid volcanic beaches of the South. Tenerife Climate

Tenerife varies in climate depending on which side of the island you stay on due to Mount Teide's influence. The warmest areas are generally found in the South West of the island with hours of sunshine averaging up to 11 hours a day here. The maximum average temperature is 24°C in Summer with a minimum of 15°C in Winter. Average sea temperatures are 18 - 23°C.

Popular Tenerife Resorts

Tenerife has many popular resorts all offering something a little different from each other. If it's warm/hot dry weather and long beaches that you're looking for, choose one of the resorts on the South/West coast such as Los Christianos and Playa De Las Americas. You could also visit the capital of the island Santa Cruz or if you're a windsurfing enthusiast you'll be in heaven in El Medano, the beach here is 2km long and is the longest beach on the island of Tenerife.

Flights to Tenerife

Although there are two main airports on Tenerife, most international and tourist flights go to 'Tenerife Sur' (Reina Sofia), with the other airport 'Tenerife North' (also sometimes called Tenerife International Airport or/and Los Rodeos) being used mainly for inter-island flights. Both charter flights and scheduled flights are available to Tenerife, speak to your travel agent when booking. For resorts in the South of the island it is best to fly to Tenerife Sur and for resorts further north choose Tenerife North airport.

Tenerife Nightlife

Tenerife nightlife is more popular in the Summer months (May to end of September) when it sees an increase in 18-30 year olds visiting the island. The liveliest resort in Tenerife is probably Playa de Las Americas with some areas being more family oriented than others. There are numerous clubs, bars, cafes and restaurants to choose from. For traditional tapas and fresh fish head for the resorts of Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz.

Tenerife Carnival and Festivals

If you are planning on visiting Tenerife and want to see a carnival, the best one to attend is without doubt the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival - an annual carnival held in February each year coinciding with Shrove Tuesday. This spectacular event lasts for at least a week and is a famous carnival in the Canary Islands, attracting around a million people each year. There are two parts to it 'The Official Carnival' and the 'Carnival in the Street'.
