About La Palma

Smaller than some of the other main islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura) La Palma is considered to be less spoilt by mass tourism, and is a green lush island - the most northwesterly of the Canary Islands. It is an island of contrasting geography with mountains, forests, beaches and volcanoes. The island experiences more rainfall than the other main islands but still has a warm to hot climate all year round. La Palma is a nature lovers idyllic spot with beautiful scenery and nature to explore.

Nicknamed 'Isla Bonita' (the beautiful island) this quiet, unspoilt island in the Canaries is a haven for holidaymakers looking for a quiet relaxing holiday amongst nature. La Palma doesn't cater to mass tourism or lively resorts. Instead it offers a more authentic picture of the Canary Islands, with beautiful scenery, traditional Canary Island towns and villages, amazing volcanic sights and black volcanic sand beaches.

If you're a hardened sun-worshipper and beach lover, La Palma may not be your ideal spot although it does offer a choice of mainly black sand beaches situated around the coastline.

La Palma Climate

As a Canary Island, La Palma has a year round warm climate and ample hours of sunshine. Cooled by the ocean winds, La Palma is warm as opposed to hot and tends to receive more rain in the North of the island, making it lusher and greener here. In general it receives slightly more rain annually than the other Canary Islands. The Island can experience temperature highs of 30°C in Summer and in Winter temperatures don't tend to drop below 20°C.

The main holiday resorts in La Palma are Puerto Naos, Puerto de Tazacorte and Los Cancajos. Puerto Naos has a 500m black sand beach and is a small holiday resort on the North West of the island offering stunning scenery and natural beauty. Los Cancajos in the East is the most developed holiday resort on La Palma, but is still understated compared to the other Canary Islands. It has black sand beaches, restaurants and hotels and is a great base for walking holidays, aswell as a wonderful place for watching the sun rise. Although there are hotels available in most resorts, self catering apartments are also popular on the island of La Palma.

Flights to La Palma

Although a small island, direct flights are available to La Palma from UK airports such as Manchester and Gatwick. Flights are also available inter-island from the other Canary Islands such as Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The airport on the island is situated just South of the capital Santa Cruz de la Palma.

La Palma Nightlife

If you are looking for nightlife in the Canary Islands then La Palma is probably not the island for you. It has a relaxed, laid back appeal and is visited more often by nature lovers and walkers wanting to explore the rich diversity of its scenery. There are bars and restaurants in the holiday resorts here but they are understated when it comes to nightlife. There are some wonderful fish restaurants to sample though and plenty of other more active activities available instead of nightlife.

La Palma Carnival and Festivals

Although small, La Palma still has its fair share of Carnivals and Fiestas throughout the year, including the feast of the almond bloom and Carnival in February, Easter, Corpus Christi in May any many more. During Carnival in February the island of La Palma celebrates 'Dia de los Indianos' (day of the indians) which involves a huge talcum powder fight attended by thousands of people. Every five years, 'The Bajada de la virgen de las nieves' is celebrated in Santa Cruz usually in July and is considered a very important festival.
