About Marmaris - Turkey

Marmaris is located in Turkey, a short way up on the Eastern side, on the coast in the region of Dalaman. This is a port town which holds several marinas and is just across the water from the Greek Island Rhodes. Because of this, it is easy to take excursions into Greek territory if you so wish, but there is also plenty to do within Marmaris itself. Overlooked by mountainous regions, Marmaris has a varied landscape and a beautiful Mediterranean climate, which stays warm into the winter time.

Holidays to Marmaris

Marmaris is a prime holiday resort because of its proximity to a variety of activities to suit all of the family. The waters that make up the Mediterranean coastline of Turkey provide plenty of chances to participate in water sports and take in some beautiful views, and there is also a friendly feel to the resort of Marmaris. The plentiful number of hotels provide a lot of nightlife that is unrivalled in other parts of Turkey and this makes is a great location for the younger clubbing audience that other places in Europe attract, whilst also providing many daytime activities and excursions that may be lacking in the purely club driven cities elsewhere.

Marmaris Holidays

The temperatures can reach over 40°C in the summer, so take plenty of sun lotion and prepare for a lot of fun in a relaxing environment. This is a very tourism driven area, which is very different to the fishing town that used to be in its place, so be prepared to travel a little if you want to see rural Turkey. However, there is plenty to do in the resort itself that will ensure you will have a memorable holiday.

Marmaris Climate

As it is located on the Mediterranean, expect warm to hot temperatures all year around in Marmaris. The best times for a holiday are in the Spring and Autumn if you want a nice average heat (30°C between May and October), as in the summer it can climb to 40°C quite regularly. If you visit in July and August remember to pack plenty of cover ups for the sun and to keep well hydrated, as they are the hottest months of the year. Between May and October it is practically guaranteed to be sunny and warm every day. Heavy rain storms can sometimes occur in the Winter, but generally Marmaris is good for Winter sun holidays too, as the waters stay warm and you will be able to walk around in a T-shirt comfortably. This makes it the perfect climate for a holiday practically any month of the year.

Marmaris Flights and Getting to Marmaris

If you fly over to Marmaris you will land at Dalaman Airport, which is slightly to the South East of your destination. There is a £10 (€15 or 20 USD) charge when you land which will allow you to pass into Turkey so please budget for this. Coaches leave the airport regularly to take tourists to the resort of Marmaris and will climb over a mountainous region with beautiful dense greenery to do so, from which you will see Marmaris stretch out below you. The time difference is 2 hours (3 during March to September) from the UK, or 1 hour from central Europe, so jet lag will not really be a problem.

Things to do in Marmaris

Marmaris has beautiful beaches and several marinas for you to explore. A very picturesque sea front, you can spend a day wandering along it looking at the boats and soaking up the sun. You will find water sports offered along this strip on most days, so take a day to indulge in some. You could even scuba dive in the crystal seas and admire the local marine life. Whether you are an adult or child, make sure you take a trip to Atlantis Water Park too, which is on Marmaris beach. You can take a bus ride there and spend the day on the flumes and in wave pools, before having a meal at the small restaurant there. It is a lovely day and a great way to enjoy the sun without getting overheated.

The main town of the resort itself has many family activities such as crazy golf and other such attractions for children, but it is a good idea to book excursions too as there is so much to see in Turkey. Ask your travel agent beforehand about the trips on offer or speak to your rep once you've arrived. Expect a pick up time of between 8 and 10 am for most excursions and a coach ride over the mountains which surround the area, but it is worth it to see the lovely sites than can be on the end of such trips and flies by. You can take shopping days out to the designer outlets (containing many leather goods as well as some jewellery shops for lovely pieces) aswell as doing some shopping in the bazaars of the area where you can have a go at haggling!. Other popular trips to other towns and areas include those to the Dalyan sulphuric Mud baths where you can bathe in mud, dry off, shower and then take a dip in sulphur pools. It leaves skin wonderfully soft and is very memorable, a natural wonder. Take this in on the 'Turtle Beach' trip, which stops off there as well as taking you to a beautiful beach (7km long!), pointing out tombs of kings and other landmarks on your way. Make sure you look up rafting on the Dalaman river too if in the region, which is as much fun as any white water rafting experience can be.

One day trip to take, whatever your reason for holidaying in Turkey, is to a traditional Turkish Bath. There are several dotted around and they are wonderful. You get to have a sauna, a scrub down and a trip to steam rooms, which all leaves you feeling wonderfully refreshed. You will be minus a layer of skin at the end though, so maybe try and schedule this before any beach sessions where you want to build your tan.

Other places not to miss include Pammukale, with its solid calcium deposits to walk on, and Ephesus. Pammukale is roughly a 3 hour drive from Marmaris, but it is a natural wonder that will take you breath away. Standing on the calcium looking down at the Turkish landscape will never be forgotten and provides some beautiful photo opportunities. There is also a centre there to look round and a cafe and shops, so you can make a day of it with no trouble at all. There really is an abundance of things to do, and some wonderful sights to be held as well if you are prepared to travel a short way.

Marmaris Culture, Food and Dress

Restaurants up and down Bar Street (this is also where bars and clubs are, that stay open until 5am) are cheap and serve both local dishes, such as plenty of fresh fish and grilled meat terrines, as well as international cuisine, such as pizzas. There is a large Tesco store for those self catering or wanting snacks, and there will be a restaurant at most hotels too if you fancy a night in. Most hotels put on entertainment there, such as Turkish nights or barbeques, so make the most of it, but do wander out too as the food is in abundance and there is so much choice.

Something to note before moving on is that Turkey is a somewhat Islamic country. This can raise worries with holiday goers, but as long as you know simple dress rules then you will be fine. Marmaris itself is a real holiday resort, so you can wear any typical holiday wear. The only thing to be cautious about is topless ness on the beach, which sometimes causes offence. If you head out of the region or into mosques, please make sure to take a scarf with you. A headscarf is a must for mosque visits, as is a covering for your thighs and upper arms, so dress accordingly and remember to wear shoes that are easy to take off too, as this is required. Other than that, you can relax and have a great holiday!

Cheap Holidays to Marmaris

Marmaris holidays are hot, lively and very popular. With guaranteed sunshine, cheap holidays to Mamraris are in demand every year from UK tourists and continue to be a popular choice for Summer Holidays.
