About Cairo

Cairo is the capital of Egypt and is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. Famous for its ancient monuments and wealth of Egyptian history, Cairo offers a multitude of opportunities to explore and be amazed by the Egyptian world both historically and now. Home to the world famous Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx, holidays to Cairo are filled with wonder.

Holidays to Cairo

Although many holiday makers go to Cairo to experience the ancient history and amazing sightseeing, it is also a busy city, with plenty of activities to see and do. There are lots of cafes, restaurants, ancient districts, and shopping facilities with huge bazaars such as Kahn El-Khalili offering everything you can imagine.

The River Nile also draws tourists in with the opportunity of cruises along its banks, with numerous ancient sites and temples to stop off at along the way. Cairo itself is an intense, busy city and is best suited to tourists looking for an active holiday as opposed to a sunbathing one.

Cairo Climate

The city can be blisteringly hot in the summer and holidaymakers are well advised to avoid the summer sun here when temperatures can reach an average high of 35°C with records highs of 43°C being reached at times. During the months of September to April, Cairo is cooler, although still hot, and average highs of 17°C are normal in January. Dust storms from the Sirocco winds from the Sahara can affect the city during April.

Cairo Holidays - When to Visit

The best time to visit Cairo is between November and March, to avoid the high temperatures of the summer season. Dust storms can occur from late March onwards and usually reach their peak during April so you may want to avoid the city at that time. Ramadan (the Islamic month of fasting) is usually from September to October (mid month) and some of the tourist sites, museums and shops close or are open for limited hours during this time also. Temperatures between November to March will still be hot but bearable. Inside the hotels you may need a light jumper as the buildings in Cairo are designed to keep the heat out.
